A River Town

Settled on the Naugatuck River in New Haven County, Ansonia is known for being a manufacturing town throughout its history. The river played, and still does play, a big role in the town's development. Today's Ansonia, while still having many thriving businesses, is also known for it's green space. People throughout the area visit the Ansonia Nature & Recreation Center for hikes as well as classes and events. The Riverwalk Park is a place to enjoy the river while running, biking or simply taking a walk and enjoying our beautiful river. 

When the River Floods

While we are grateful for the river and how it has helped the town grow, flooding has been an issue throughout the town's history. Most notably, in 1955, Hurricane Diane caused the river to overflow and many homes and businesses were destroyed on Main Street.  Hurricanes and the water damage they bring are a 'once every couple of years' concern for the Naugatuck Valley.
