For those of you who aren’t from here, a history lesson is in order. We’ve had a wild ride!
Geologists estimate that nearby rock formations pushed up about 70 million years ago, but we’re not going to provide a detailed history from that time forward; we’ll skip to 1859. That’s when Major Robert B. Bradford traveled from Denver to purchase the land. He built the Bradford/Perley House Inn and a toll road (just try that kind of thing now!). Between the tolls ($1.50 per wagon, which is approximately $53.52 in today’s dollars) and the inn, he built himself a fortune.
Colorow Elementary School and Colorow’s Cave are named for one of the inn’s frequent visitors, the Ute Chief Colorow.
A couple of owners later, the Bradford/Perley house was a dairy farm that the newest owner transformed into a larger ranching operation; he named the ranch after his sons: Kent and Carroll! Ta-da! Ken Caryl!
Eventually, the entire valley became home to industry, such as aeronautics.
Despite the changes and the transformation of ranches to corporate HQs to houses, we’ve maintained our emphasis on the natural beauty of the mountains and valleys.
