Greenhorn, Colorado is a hamlet in Colorado situated to the south of Colorado City and the east of Greenhorn Mountain in the area known as Greenhorn Valley.
History
Greenhorn got its start as a campsite for travelers on the Sante Fe Trail in 1824. A former fur trapper named John Brown settled the area and ran a trading post there in 1841. By 1856, conflicts between settlers and members of the Ute and Arapahoe tribes left the camp nearly deserted. In 1866, Alexander Hicklin established a post office at the camp and changed the name of the town from Brown's Camp to Greenhorn as a reference to the Comanche Chief Cureno Verde who New Mexico governor Juan Bautista de Anza killed near the camp in 1779.
The town expanded as settlers and ranchers moved in. In 1916, Rafael Fossceco and his family purchased Greenhorn and turned it into a tourist attraction that thrived until the construction of Interstate 25 to the east in the mid-1940s eliminated much of the travel through the area. The town faded away and now is primarily used as a residence for the large Fosseco family. Though the land is now private, visitors can schedule a tour to see the historic buildings.

The Bonnie Meade Reservoir is two miles northeast of Greenhorn. Cold Spring is 2.5 miles to the northwest. Greenhorn Meadows Park is two miles to the north and there is a gravel quarry 2.5 miles west. Visitors to the area can enjoy hiking, fishing, and camping.
