Newberry Springs is in the Western part of the Mojave Desert of Southern California, located at the foot of the Newberry Mountains in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The town’s name originally was “Water” because of its role in supplying water to the Santa Fe Railway in the 19th century. In the 1880s the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad hauled tank cars of water from Newberry Springs to the stations and towns in the region, making life in this arid land possible. 

Water skiing is important to the area, yet there are desert courses that are popular for motocross, dune buggy, and ATV racing. The area also supports camping, hunting, fishing, wilderness backpacking, and paraflying. 

Despite the desert, the consistent climate and underground water supply make it an ideal location for farming some crops, and it hosts an annual pistachio festival in November. Other crops include apricots and alfalfa. Ranches and farms raise/support ostriches, horses, buffalo, ducks, catfish, and koi. 

Historic Route 66 runs through Newberry Springs, as do Interstates 15 and 40 and the BNSF (a subsidiary of parent company Burlington Northern Santa Fe) transcontinental railway.
