Murrieta, California, is a city in Riverside County. Spanish-born Ezequial Murrieta was captivated by the area's natural beauty, reminding him of his homeland. He purchased 52,000 acres and established a sheep ranch, eventually turning over the property to his brother, Juan, in 1873. In 1882 the city became a popular destination when the Southern California Railroad added it to its southern transcontinental route.
