Helendale (also called “Silver Lakes”) is in the Victor Valley of the Mojave Desert, within San Bernardino County, California. The United States Postal Service (USPS) uses “Helendale” for the 92342 zip code while the United States Census uses the name “Silver Lakes.” 

Whatever the name, it is on Route 66, between Barstow and Victorville. The original name was Point of Rocks.  

The Santa Fe Railroad arrived in the 1880s and built a Point of Rocks station, which provided a watering stop for the steam engine locomotives that were moving trains across the desert. On December 15, 1897, the town received its first new name, “Helen,” in honor of a railroad executive’s daughter. It became “Helendale” in 1918.  

The name was changed to Helen in honor of Helen A. Wells (born 1885), daughter of railroad executive Arthur G. Wells (1861–1932). On September 22, 1918, the name was changed to “Helendale.” 

In 1969, construction began on two manmade lakes, North Lake and South Lake. The water for the lakes comes from the Mojave River, which runs underground at this part of the desert.  

A resort community, Silver Lakes, opened at Helendale in the early 1970s. Most of the town is the resort, hence the name confusion. With so many visitors enjoying Silver Lakes throughout the year there is no doubt a huge need for water damage restoration and fire damage restoration.
