Saline County’s southernmost community is the City of Traskwood. The area remained unoccupied until after the end of the Civil War and began as a train depot for the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway in the late 1800s. It was reportedly named after two railway workers (Trask and Wood), whose names were combined to create the name Traskwood. By the time the city was incorporated in 1900, the town had several stores, a dance hall, a school, and a doctor. As the nation’s dependence on the railroad industry declined with the additions of the interstate and air traffic, small railroad towns began to diminish. Traskwood, however, was able to gain population during this time as residents of larger urban areas moved in, seeking more rural and quiet neighborhoods.  

Today, Traskwood is a small town, with a population just shy of 400 residents. This suburban-rural mix community is free of the commercial enterprises of its larger neighbors, keeping the countryside quiet and serene.
