In Saline County, off highway 67 sits the City of Haskell. Development began after the Civil War with the expansion of the railroads through Arkansas. Haskell became an important depot on the route to Louisiana. It is believed that the town is named after Haskell Dickenson who was the first postmaster for the city. The development of agriculture and the timber industry helped the town to continue to grow. Later, in 1934 work was completed on the Arkansas Health Center, which helped the population grow to where it stands today at just over 4,000 residents.
