Located on the Arkansas-Oklahoma border, near the junction of interstates 40 and 540, Fort Smith, Arkansas, was founded in 1817 as a military post by the United States. Used a base during the Mexican War, Fort Smith became a bustling community located just across the river from Indian Territory. Later in 1941, the U.S. Army established the Fort Chaffee Military Reservation east of the city. As of late, Fort Smith is the third largest city in Arkansas with a metropolitan area population of more than 225,000 people and constantly growing.
