Bauxite: “The Town that Aluminum Built”  

The city of Bauxite is named after the ore from which aluminum is refined. Its abundance in this area led to the city's rapid growth during the First World War. The population rose quickly again when World War II broke out and demand for aluminum refining spiked once again. During this time, the Aluminum Company of America in Bauxite had workers scheduled 24 hours a day, so that refinement never stopped. In 1943 the ALCOA refined 6,000,000 tons of ore just from Bauxite.  

Today, Bauxite has a population of just under 1,000 residents. The Bauxite Historical Association Museum stands as a pilar of the town’s history. Residents continue to pay tribute to their aluminum mining roots by naming local streets after the major producers from the 1940s. Additionally, the athletic team of the local high school is named, “The Miners.”
