The city of Elkmont has an interesting history dating back to before the Civil War. Settlers began coming to the area as early as 1817. In the 1850's, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad built a line through the Elkmont area, the Elkmont Depot. This was meant to serve the daily traffic passing through the area and actually is still standing today. During the Civil War, Elkmont's rail line became a target for its importance to the Union shuttling supplies to a fort at the Sulphur Creek Trestle. The Confederate army won a victory over the Union at the Sulphur Creek Trestle on September 25, 1864. The battle grounds can still be visited today by historian buffs, and novice travelers alike.
