Groundwater flooding is usually covered by flood insurance, not a standard homeowners policy.

Knowing where the main water shutoff is located on your property can help prevent water damage to your home or business in an emergency.

Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

They were professional, on time, respectful of my property and my family. We are in a farm and have dogs that mind our animals. They were sweet with them and took the time to get to know them. My animals loved them which told me a lot of what I needed to know from the out. Woukd work with them again. I hope you do too!

The folks at ServPro in New Kent County are ROCKSTARS! They do what they say they will do, when they say they will do it. The team is professional and communicative. As homeowners we knew the details every step of the way. I am unable to comment on price because ServPro invoices to date have been paid by our insurance company

Very prompt with my needs and what was needed for my properties. I had a few other companies in the running but they didn't come close to the assistance I got and the professionalism from this company. Recommend 1000% to anyone who needs any of their services.

This was my second time working with Servpro on a water issue. They we fantastic the first time, which is why I called them for the second issue. They are very customer friendly, responsive, communicative, flexible and easy to work with. They are also very efficient in their remediation work and will take great care to make sure the job is completed correctly. While they do not actually put the home back together where drywall repairs and insulation are needed, they do refer quality professionals who will do this for you, which was a great benefit to me instead of looking around for my own contractor. I highly recommend their services and friendly people.

We recently contacted servpro of New Kent due to a white mold problem in our log cabin that originated from our HVAC system. On my initial phone call I knew I would be in good hands. Unfortunately I don't remember the two ladies names that I spoke with but they were super friendly and very knowledgeable and explained the whole process of cleaning the ducts and HVAC unit. They promptly scheduled the visit and quoted a price by just asking a few simple questions. Tommy and Mark arrived on time and were very friendly and knowledgeable about the task and answered any questions I had and they worked diligently to complete the job and even let me pitch in to help. Great folks and I highly recommend Servpro of NewKent. Brian C. Disputanta Va.

To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to the New Kent Servpro team. Recently, my residence experienced a septic line rupture, which resulted in a significant mess. The crew responded immediately to my call, took charge of the situation, and efficiently managed the cleanup under my home. I was particularly impressed by their professionalism and communication. They took the time to explain the entire process and the expected timeframe, and they listened patiently to all my concerns throughout. Their politeness and respectful demeanor made a difficult situation much more manageable. I highly recommend this team. While I hope not to need emergency services again, I would gladly call upon them if the need arises. Thank you again for your outstanding service. Sincerely, Susan Shifflett

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
