SERVPRO Helps with the Insurance Claim Process

At SERVPRO, we understand that property damage can be overwhelming. With decades of experience, SERVPRO can help document damage and provide information related to the services performed that can assist customers during the insurance claim process.

Groundwater flooding is usually covered by flood insurance, not a standard homeowners policy.

Knowing where the main water shutoff is located on your property can help prevent water damage to your home or business in an emergency.

Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

Craig Wilson was who we worked with throughout the remediation process and played a big part in getting us back up and running. He was patient, communicative, and understanding of our family’s needs throughout the process, and worked with us to make sure everything was handled and put back in order. While the overall process wasn’t completely seamless, our experience working with Craig was positive and we appreciated his flexibility and professionalism throughout. Overall, I’d recommend SERVPRO and their services.

If you ever wondered whether that whole "Make like it never even happened happen" ad campaign was truthful? I'm here to tell you - It is. Quite happy with ServPro and Alex's, Claudia's, Juan's, and Enzo's teams, if really unhappy with why we needed their services in the first place. Board-up on day of event, water-and-smoke remediation/cleaning, textile cleaning (part of smoke remediation), unpacking return of textiles, and building contractor for a minor rebuild. Expensive? I dunno, I'd like to think you get what you pay for, and the expertise in dealing with this stuff professionally was readily apparent - and the people we dealt with were great. Biggest issue was on textile with some items that were damaged. In the grand scheme, nuisance, and not horrible. We don't ever want to go thru that again, but if we do, I wouldn't hesitate to work with ServPro again. They were great. Thanks.

The quality of the work met my expectations, and I appreciate the attention to detail during the cleanup and restoration. Thank you for your assistance during this time. I would not hesitate to recommend SERVPRO to others in need of restoration services.

We discovered mold in a small area of our home, and this company handled it carefully. They removed the affected section and treated the space to prevent it from returning. Compared to ignoring the issue, this gave us peace of mind. The process was explained clearly, and everything was completed within a few days.

This is my second time using ServPro. It’s unfortunate when you need their services, but they make the whole process easy and seamless. Monica at the office catered to my specific needs and Victor and his crew were on time, polite, and efficient. They were in and out quickly, having completed a job well done. I would use ServPro again.

I can’t say enough great things about Victor and his team at Servpro. Victor took the time to thoroughly explain the process, set clear expectations, and ensure we felt confident every step of the way. His team arrived on time, worked efficiently, and treated my space with care and respect. What truly stood out was their commitment to doing the job right—not just quickly, but thoroughly. It’s rare to find a team that combines expertise with such a high level of customer service. I would absolutely recommend Victor and his team to anyone in need of restoration services. Top-tier experience from start to finish.

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
