SERVPRO Helps with the Insurance Claim Process

At SERVPRO, we understand that property damage can be overwhelming. With decades of experience, SERVPRO can help document damage and provide information related to the services performed that can assist customers during the insurance claim process.

Groundwater flooding is usually covered by flood insurance, not a standard homeowners policy.

Knowing where the main water shutoff is located on your property can help prevent water damage to your home or business in an emergency.

Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

Our entire basement flooded after a heavy rainstorm. ServePro came the next day to assess the damage and provide us with solutions. The Operations Manager, Gianpiero, was not only competent and professional but worked with his team to get the job done in a timely manner. He was also compassionate in understanding how difficult it was for us to cope with the loss of lots of sentimental items that accumulate over many years in a basement. We are grateful for his help.

After a flood in my basement I called Servpro of Upper Westside late on a Friday evening. Damian contacted me early Saturday and came very quickly to access the damage. From that point on Damian worked with my Insurance Company and coordinated all the vendor work that I needed. Every phone call, text and email from me (and there were many!) was responded to quickly and professionally. I always felt they were looking out for my best interest and to make sure my repairs were done smoothly and to my satisfaction. I highly recommend Servpro of Upper Westside and their team.

Ben Vargas and his team went above and beyond in servicing my home after a fire. He was referred to us by our public adjuster and was so attentive to our every need from cleaning, discarding packing, storing and moving and everyone was polite and followed Covid 19 protocol thought the entire process. I would definitely recommend his company and the quality service and professionalism they provide!

Servepro was there for my family during a very traumatic evening when my house sustained severe smoke damaged from a fire. Our family didn’t know what to do and where to start. The owner assured me he would help. He waited with us patiently. He spoke to my insurance for me while we were in distress. He took care of everything. He was patient and explained everything to me and was always available to answer our questions. We are very thankful to the owner and his amazing crew. I highly recommend you reach out to them with any home emergencies.

I had a fire in my apartment that started in my kitchen. After the fire department left Ben from Servpro of the upper west side was extremely helpful! We got an estimate and they quickly got to work. Two days later the smell of the smoke was completely gone. The soot was gone from all the surfaces and cabinets in my kitchen. It was clean and done with such professionalism. The price was fair and I was more satisfied. I recommend Servpro of the upper west side to all families that have lost their homes from floods, fires, and etc.

Kitchen flood at 1am - servepro picked up immediately - on site with equipment - total pros. They came back for insurance walk-through with digital readouts and backup for claims. Negotiating with agents became a non-issue. Well done.

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
