Knowing where the main water shutoff is located on your property can help prevent water damage to your home or business in an emergency.

Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

We had a pipe burst in the middle of a winter night. It caused a small electrical fire and it was such a stressful situation. Stefanie and her team were at our house first thing in the morning, assessing the damage and starting the cleanup process. They made sure to leave no stone unturned and put our house back together better than it was before. I was so greatful to have the support of their team the whole way. They helped alleviate so much stress around such an unexpected situation.

The overall experience saved thousands of dollars and headache. With their assistance, we prevented the relocation of 10 residents. Machine rentals were easily obtained. Staffing and follow up and invoicing were all amazing.

Hats off to Chuck, Ray and Zack at Servprov! Our basement was flooded in June of 2025, and the crew arrived at our home in record time! They were quick to assess the damage and immediately began mitigating the situation. They were courteous, accommodating and professional every step of the way. In addition, the office staff - Laurie, Christina, Holly and Stephanie were amazing! We had many questions along the way, and they went above and beyond to assist us. They were extremely pleasant, helpful and responsive in every interaction. Given the upsetting situation we were in, we could not have asked for a better team of professionals!

I used Servpro recently in a house flood and found them to be quickly responsive, clear in their proposed work, and very professional in carrying out their assignment. Throughout their several days on sight their communication was excellent. Their coordination with my insurance agent was flawless. Communication with their office coordinator was always helpful and responsive. I highly recommend them.

I can’t say enough good things about SERVPRO of NW & SE Dutchess Counties. From the very first night our water damage happened, Zack called me right away and patiently walked me through what to expect and how the process would go. Chuck came out shortly after to stabilize everything until the full remediation could begin, and he was incredibly kind and professional. When the techs came to do the demo work, they were so respectful, sweet, and thorough. I’m so sorry I don’t remember all their names, but they truly did an excellent job. Every single person I spoke to, even the ladies who called to schedule, were kind, professional, and compassionate during such a stressful time. Zack especially went above and beyond, guiding us through the entire process and answering every question along the way. I’m so grateful for the care and professionalism of this entire team. I highly recommend SERVPRO of NW & SE Dutchess Counties to anyone in need of remediation services you’ll be in great hands.

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
