Here are some ways to help prevent these common causes of fires:

• Keep grills at least 10 feet away from homes, decks, and other structures. Also, clean grease and fat buildup from grills regularly to help prevent flare-ups.
• Avoid overloading outlets or extension cords with air conditioners, fans, or outdoor equipment.
• Properly dispose of cigarettes and never throw smoking materials into mulch, landscaping, or dry grass.
• Use fireworks only in approved areas and keep a hose or bucket of water nearby.
• Never leave fire pits or bonfires unattended and fully extinguish them with water before leaving the area.
• Store gasoline, propane tanks, and other flammable liquids in well-ventilated areas away from heat sources.
• Install and regularly test smoke alarms throughout your home or business.
