Groundwater flooding is usually covered by flood insurance, not a standard homeowners policy.

Knowing where the main water shutoff is located on your property can help prevent water damage to your home or business in an emergency.

Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

SERVPRO of Southeast Long Beach/Belmont Shores handled water damage and mold remediation at my 100-year-old Long Beach home, and I can't recommend them highly enough. This is a family owned and operated business, and it shows in how they work. They were extremely collaborative from the first call through final clearance. When rain moved in mid-project, they walked me through exactly how they were going to protect the house. When we uncovered pests behind a wall, they stopped, explained what we were looking at, and helped me figure out the right next step instead of just working around it. That kind of communication during the process is rare, and it made a stressful situation manageable. They clearly know what they're doing, and just as important, they can explain it. Every decision came with the reasoning behind it, in plain language, so I always understood what was happening in my own home and why. They were genuinely passionate about getting us through mold air clearance testing — not just passing it, but doing the work right so there was no question about the result. We passed. They also treated my possessions and my house like they were their own. Careful with everything, clean at the end of every day, no shortcuts in the places nobody would have seen. If you need emergency services, water damage cleanup, or mold remediation in the Long Beach area, call Jack and his team. For those that care about this: my dog Athena (who does not like everyone) absolutely loved the full family, and she was excited whenever her friends came over.

Had a great experience with Christian and Jaqueline. They were very professional and efficient in analyzing our mold situation using their instruments and taping off the affected areas. When they learned we wanted to redesign our closet and laundry room, they advised us directly and honestly about the most affordable and efficient approach, even though that meant we should work with a different service provider. They are not only great at what they do but they are also very nice people.

Jack, Christian and Jacklyn did a great job helping with the remediation job we needed when we had a leak from an upstairs neighbor. They carefully explained everything they were going to do and handled the job courteously and professionally. I would highly recommend them.

I had an issue with water spilling onto the passenger floor of my car, and I was in a pretty desperate situation trying to figure out what to do. I spoke with Jack, and he took the time out of his day to give me kind, considerate, and careful advice. He genuinely cared about helping me instead of just rushing me off the phone. Thanks to his guidance, I was able to avoid a much bigger problem and saved hundreds of dollars. Exceptional customer service like this is hard to find these days. I truly appreciate the help and highly recommend this company!

I am so grateful that my son, an environmental emergency first responder who has contracted with Servpro in his work, immediately called Jack Ruiz to oversee an overwhelming home interior clean up we found when a relative passed. The situation required a multi day cleanup. Jack and his wonderfully proficient and compassionate crew of three knew exactly how to approach the disaster my family faced. Each member of the Team was a pleasure to work with. Also Jack was able to recommend excellent contractors to make all the repairs the home needed. Jack and Team have given me cause to whole-hearted recommend them to anyone needing the highest level of professionalism to provide any level of cleanup need.

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
