Knowing where the main water shutoff is located on your property can help prevent water damage to your home or business in an emergency.

Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

We had a water pipe fail in our wall that caused extensive damage to drywall and cabinets in our kitchen and office. Servpro to the rescue. 9 weeks later we are back to normal. Company was right on it and we were kept informed thru the whole process. If you need restoration work and reconstruction they should be considered first. I’m very pleased with the outcome.

I can’t say enough positive things about this franchise and its crew. BJ, Alexiz, Preskitt, Ethan, junior, and Andrew all did a fantastic job. Within 90 minutes of learning that I had an interior flood from a toilet leak, ServPro arrived and took control of the cleanup by removing carpet and flooring, cabinets and furniture as well as personal possessions. They handle arrangements for a secure storage container in site and all of the furnishings that needed to be removed were stored in the container so the home could be prepared for restoration. I was so impressed with the professionalism of the company and crew that I felt 100% confident to have them oversee the restoration of my home. Can’t say enough positive things from all whom I encountered; including office staff Jennifer and leadership team who were on the job to make sure everything that needed to be done was completed efficiently and timely. Their level of care and involvement gave me peace of mind as an out of town owner that I was in very good hands. I’d highly recommend this company for disaster clean up or any other renovation project. Top notch and reputable.

We had a pipe break that caused water damage in our home, and the SERVPRO team was absolutely incredible from start to finish. Every time we called they were here promptly to address our concerns. Their quick response and professionalism immediately put us at ease. They walked through everything with our insurance adjuster and even handled the conversations for us because I was so upset and nervous. They worked directly with the insurance company on our behalf, coordinated subcontractors, and even helped arrange additional out-of-pocket projects we wanted done. Jen in the office was fantastic at keeping communication smooth, and Sam, BJ, and Howard truly went above and beyond on all dealings we had with them. We are so grateful for their hard work, kindness, and dedication. I highly recommend SERVPRO to anyone needing restoration services! Amazing people!

We had an absolutely OUTSTANDING experience with Servpro of Casa Grande after our home was heavily vandalized by tenants in April of 2025. From the very first appointment, their team responded quickly and treated our situation with professionalism and confidence. Sam immediately put us at ease, answered all of our questions, and guided us through the insurance process—often handling difficult parts on our behalf. What we thought would be the end of us became something Sam immediately took charge of, and the final result turned out a hundred times better than we ever imagined possible. Because we live over an hour away, trusting someone with our home was a big decision, but Servpro exceeded every expectation. The mitigation was completed quickly, and the rebuild team did an exceptional job. Mike’s attention to detail and craftsmanship truly show throughout the home, and Jennifer in the office kept us informed every step of the way with clear and timely communication. As first-time homeowners facing a worst-case scenario crisis, we honestly don’t know what we would have done without Servpro. Their teamwork, expertise, and care turned an overwhelming situation into a smooth and successful rebuild. We are incredibly grateful and HIGHLY recommend them to anyone in need of restoration work! Thank you so much Servpro! God bless you all!

Our toilet tank cracked and flooded the bathroom floor and other areas of the house They arrived within an hour after I called. B J. and the crew were professional, friendly, and explained the process in detail. They cleaned up the water and placed fans around the house to prevent mold damage. They communicated with us throughout the entire process and if I had any questions, they answered promptly. The service was excellent during a very stressful time, and I highly recommend SERVPRO of Casa Grande!

SERVPRO Flood Damage Knowledge Center

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
