Groundwater flooding is usually covered by flood insurance, not a standard homeowners policy.

Knowing where the main water shutoff is located on your property can help prevent water damage to your home or business in an emergency.

Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

Exceptional Service When Our Family Needed It Most I genuinely cannot say enough good things about SERVPRO and the team that helped our family through what was easily one of the worst situations we have ever experienced in our home. Two weeks ago, a sewage pipe ruptured in our basement, leaving approximately three inches of raw sewage across three separate rooms. It was overwhelming. Our home was unsafe, and my wife, our 2-year-old, and our 1-month-old baby had to be displaced. That is where SERVPRO—and especially their team leader, Pete—showed us what exceptional service actually looks like. When Pete learned that my wife and two very young children had been forced out of our home, he literally turned around on the highway at 4pm to come help us. That one action tells you everything you need to know about the type of person he is and the type of company SERVPRO represents. From the moment the team arrived, they were incredible. They immediately took control of an extremely stressful situation while still treating us with compassion and respect. They pumped out the sewage, thoroughly decontaminated the affected areas, and handled the demolition of our entire basement with an unbelievable level of professionalism and efficiency. But what impressed me most wasn't just the quality of their work—it was how they treated my family throughout the entire process. The communication was outstanding. We were kept informed about what was happening, what needed to happen next, and what we should expect throughout the process. Calls and questions were answered. Things were explained clearly. They showed up when they said they would. Every member of the team was professional, respectful, efficient, and genuinely caring. I've dealt with many companies and contractors over the years, and I can confidently say that the communication and professionalism we experienced with this SERVPRO team was the best I have ever seen. When something like this happens to your home, you're not simply looking for a company to remove water or tear out damaged material. You're trusting strangers to walk into your home during an incredibly stressful moment and help your family begin putting things back together. Pete and his team understood that. They didn't treat our home like another job on a schedule. They treated us like people who needed help. I would like to highlight Luis,Nas, Marcos, and Cal. They came in and showed what attention to detail looks like. Much like Pete, their professionalism and communication was superior To Pete and the entire SERVPRO team: thank you. Thank you for the urgency you showed when you learned we had two small children displaced from their home. Thank you for the communication, the professionalism, the compassion, and the incredible amount of work you put into making our home safe again. If I could give more than five stars, I would. I would recommend this SERVPRO team without hesitation to anyone who finds themselves dealing with water, sewage, or property damage. When our family needed help the most, they showed up—and they were exceptional from beginning to end.

Pete and his team, Miguel and Ronny, did an amazing job with the remediation of our basement after our water heater leaked. Pete was on-site within two hours to conduct the assessment, and he had his team there within the hour. He worked closely with our insurance company on a plan and took action right away. Pete and his team truly made a stressful situation so much easier to handle. Highly recommend!

Luis and Marco were prompt, professional, thorough and clean. Also, project manager Tashi Chavis responded to my home within two hours of the call to coordinate a game plan of remediation. Luis and Marco addressed unexpected obstacles without complaint and stayed past midnight until the job was complete.

Servpro helped us after our toilet flooded our first floor by mitigating the damage. They had to set up humidifiers and fans and did a phenomenal job putting up tarp around the areas and making our home still accessible to use as much as possible. They’re incredibly helpful, responsive, and came as quickly as they could to remove the equipment. They even taped off our walls that are still open so that our child wouldn’t get to them! Very much appreciate their company and would use them again.

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
