Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

I’ve been very impressed with SERVPRO so far! I called on Friday, and despite it being Labor Day weekend, Mason was out on Tuesday. He communicated his arrival time and the plan to meet with my insurance adjuster. Mason was incredibly thorough, helpful, and patient with all of my questions. He was understanding of how stressful the situation was and reassured me that everything was manageable and would be taken care of quickly. Just from our first interaction, I feel confident that I made the right choice with SERVPRO. I’m looking forward to seeing them complete the water mitigation process!

It is a pleasure for me to recommend Mason, Justin and all of the professionals at Servepro in Washington, NC. A faucet in a house that I own failed and the result was a totally flooded kitchen. Thankfully, Servepro in Washington was recommended to me to take the lead in the cleanup. Once contacted, Mason and Justin immediately assessed the situation and gave me an overview of what they would do and how they would handle the cleanup and demolition of the kitchen in order to prepare for reconstruction. They took control of the situation, installed large fans and de-humidifiers, removed a layer of flooring and would return daily to check the moisture readings. In addition to the water damage that had occured, they discovered that we had some asbestos flooring that would need to come out which would require special abatement. They handled the whole thing reliably and professionally. After asbestos abatement, they proceeded to finish the demo on the kitchen. They took care to pack up personal belongings of the tenants and move all appliances out of the kitchen. We still have alot of work to do to get the kitchen back in shape, but for the part that Servepro took care of, I could not have asked for any better help. My thanks to Mason and the crew for helping so much with a bad situation! They took great care, did everything they said they would do and when they said they would do it, stayed in constant contact with me, and were total professionals every step of the way!! If you have a disaster, call them....you will be glad you did!!

If I could have given more than 5 stars, I would have. I had a relative who had a fire and passed. I contacted Servpro and spoke with Mason. He came out to the property on short notice, surveyed the damage, also had a tarp placed on the roof to prevent additional damage to start, prior to remediation. I later experienced an issue during the restoration process, where someone unauthorized were attempting to enter the home in the off hours, Mason & Brent addressed the issue literally immediately and took preventive measures so it would not reoccur. The remediation process was quick and swift. They worked very well with the insurance company. It's not often I write positive reviews. I've had my share of bad experiences in the past. But not with Mason/Brent of Servpro. Very professional, understanding, compassionate (with the loss of my relative), helpful in explaining their process, they kept me updated on the progress and if any issues or delays, this is just to name a few. Mason has gone over and beyond his responsibilities, to keep my mind at ease that the property is secure. I could not have asked for a better team from Servpro to assist in correcting the various issues I was faced with the home, post fire. Keep up the great work guys ! ! !

We had a chimney fire on December 30, 2025 at our home in Bath, NC. Serv Pro of Washington handled the cleanup and repair. They went above and beyond to make our home like it was. They did an excellent job and are very knowledgeable and skilled. The owner and staff are very nice and responsive. We couldn’t have had a better experience.

I didn't actually have to use ServPro's services, but pulled into their parking lot around 5:00 with a flat tire. There were a few people in the parking lot wrapping up their day and they assisted me with changing the tire and getting me on my way. They went out of their way to help me and it was greatly appreciated. If I ever need their services I will be calling them to help.

SERVPRO - it was literally like dialing 911 and having an emergency response team rush to the scene! We had a water heater rupture and flood several rooms of our home while we were away. I called SERVPRO of Bath at4:30pm Monday night and they were at my house with in 60 minutes ! Amazing - and my house is in Williamston - approx 25 minutes away. They immediately assessed the damage, set up fans, air scrubbers, dehumidifiers. The next morning they were there early and began tearing out the damaged areas of the home. They were done and gone by Thursday morning. Notable guys were Aaron, Jeff, and Brennan. They were super polite and worked non-stop the whole time they were there. I Have worked with another "remediation company" in the Williamston area in the past - Rainbow International - and they could not hold a candle to SERVPRO. I would highly recommend SERVPRO of Bath to anyone that has the misfortune of a home situation that requires immediate remediation.

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely. 

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help. 
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.  
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items. 
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property. 
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.” 

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
