SERVPRO Helps with the Insurance Claim Process

At SERVPRO, we understand that property damage can be overwhelming. With decades of experience, SERVPRO can help document damage and provide information related to the services performed that can assist customers during the insurance claim process.

Groundwater flooding is usually covered by flood insurance, not a standard homeowners policy.

Knowing where the main water shutoff is located on your property can help prevent water damage to your home or business in an emergency.

Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

Called regarding a flooded basement. They were able to help me navigate through the process, arrived on time and did a thorough job with cleanup. They addressed all concerns with water removal and preventing mold growth. They also took care with moving personal items and preventing any damage. I was very impressed with the job and happy with the service provided, exceeded all expectations.

My family has used Karl's team several times over the years and the experience and results are always consistent... exceptional service, fast, high quality work and pleasant to work with. I also found much peace knowing that I had a team that managed the claims process for us. I speak from experience, that when your family is hit with a disaster (including the loss of personal effects, heirlooms and even loss of space) you are stressed and emotional. The last thing you want to do is have to make critical, long-lasting decisions all by yourself. This team lifts that burden and works directly with the third parties. They effectively communicate any concerns or decision points so you know exactly where you are in the process. They also leave the place looking (and smelling) better than it was even prior to the disaster and were always careful to not disturb or dirty the non-damaged parts of the house. And, once the job was done... it was done. No lingering issues or follow ups. After the last flood, I felt as if a huge was weight lifted when I saw the truck roll up. I knew it would all be ok because we had the BEST team on it. I have recommended this team to family and friends (who have thanked me for the referral after using them) and I I highly recommend this team to everyone else!

Karl and his staff are an A+ team of professionals who are not only knowledgeable but diligent and thorough. It is wonderful to see such loyalty to their customers and they show it by how they stand by their customer-first service approach. We have used them several times over the years to assist with professional cleanings (especially during COVID) and with a claim. They are a fantastic group with fast (yet thorough) turnaround times and high quality outcomes. I would highly recommend this team!

Two days before Thanksgiving a fire destroyed the home next door and significantly damaged ours. Tragically, one person did not survive. Within hours, SERVPRO arrived at our home with an air quality monitor and air scrubber that we didn't even know we needed. They left them here through the weekend, and removed them all at no cost to us. It was so reassuring to know that the air in our home was safe during such a traumatic time. We are forever grateful.

Our attic needed a deep clean from a messy roofing job and years of dust. Now we could eat dinner on the floor up there. Not a speck of dust got down to our second floor, everything was protected. Very satisfied customer.

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
