Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

I hope I never have to deal with another flood in my home, but if I do, I wouldn’t call anyone but SERVPRO. From the moment they arrived, they took control of an incredibly stressful and overwhelming situation. Instead of feeling like we had to figure everything out ourselves, we immediately felt like we were in the best hands. They managed every detail, kept us informed, and were available 24/7 whenever we had questions or concerns. Keith Jackson, the owner, was absolutely amazing. He was hands-on, reassuring, and made us feel confident from day one that everything would be handled the right way. Ben, who managed our project, was outstanding. He kept everything moving on schedule, communicated constantly, and made what could have been a chaotic process feel organized and manageable. The flood caused extensive damage to our all-wood paneled library—one of the most beautiful rooms in our home. The craftsmanship and attention to detail their team showed was remarkable. They carefully removed the woodwork with incredible precision and then put everything back together flawlessly. We also have hand-painted maps on our ceiling that are irreplaceable, and they took extraordinary care to remove and preserve them. It was clear that they treated our home as if it were their own. Everyone on the team was kind, professional, and genuinely cared about doing the job right. They stuck to the schedule they promised, were responsive 24/7, and exceeded our expectations every step of the way. We are beyond grateful for everything they did. They turned one of the most stressful experiences our family has ever faced into one where we felt supported, informed, and completely taken care of. I recommend Keith, Ben, and the entire SERVPRO team without hesitation. They are simply the best.

Steve at ServPro was incredible to work with. We had a rain storm flood our garage and basement. Upon arrival they quickly worked with me and the insurance adjuster to get our house dry and in a better place. The communication was terrific during the entire process. They also made to leave our home as clean as possible each day after they left. I would strongly recommend Dave O’Hara ServPro team in Mount Ephraim/Bellmawr as the team to call when you run into issues.

After a recent water issue in my home (thankfully clean water as opposed to sewage) we contacted ServPro in order to assess the scope of the damage and assist with remediation. Any time water goes somewhere unexpected in your home it can be a dangerous/frustrating/costly endeavor. I am happy to report that ServPro knew exactly what to do and guided us through each step in the process. Dave, Steve and Jovanny showed up and surveyed the area to understand what happened. Thankfully they had done this kind of work before and that was very evident from the moment they arrived. We were particularly concerned about how far the water had gotten and what damage it caused. They were able to quickly measure and build a flood map which followed the path of the water. I really like how they had specialized equipment to indicate where the water had actually flowed. It allowed them to make informed decisions quickly. I really appreciate how they took special care in explaining everything they were doing. Their professionalism was some of the best that I've dealt with. I love how they examined our floor material thoroughly to understand what kind of drying apparatus to use as to not cause further damage. They established containment areas around the affected areas and while these machines were quite loud (they kind of have to be) they did the job. After 3 days of pretty intense remediation the areas of my home were finally dry. I hope that you never need to call upon this crew because it means that something bad has happened. Based on my experience I can only imagine you will be met with the same level of professionalism, care and expertise that they demonstrated at our home. It really was excellent working with them and I recommend them fully.

Dave and Logan and their team are absolutely amazing. We needed their services in an emergency (as most do!) and they were quick to respond, and super helpful. We needed their help on the renovation after the remediation as well and they worked within our budget and were so communicative and understanding and helpful. Dave is one of the nicest most honest guys you’ll work with, especially as far as contractors go!

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
