Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

Its refreshing to be able to trust a company to handle your home as their own. The owner really cares about his employees and the quality of work as much as he does his company which is rare to find these days. If you're looking for a NO BS company to handle your problems for you while staying fair this is the place to go trust me. People like this make serving in the military and going to war so worth it. You guys did a phenomenal job! Crews were professional and frankly had a great time talking with them. Its like having family come over and help take over the stress that was dumped in your lap. Thank you guys for everything you did i really appreciate it. Wish more businesses were like you

Brenda and her crew very throughly cleaned our home after a construction project left a layer of dust throughout our entire home. We are grateful for their attention to detail to ensure that all the trim, blinds and surfaces were clear of dust. This was crucial so that are family and young kids were not subjected to breathing in the tiny particles.

We experienced a flooded basement due to a recent record breaking rainstorm. Initially, our insurance company sent a clean-up company (not ServPro) to our home. After several days of no action. By that time, we have mold forming in the basemwnt and our possessions and furniture were being ruined. We contacted our insurance and stated that we wanted ServPro. Within 24 hours, representatives from ServPro, Mack and Tyler arrived at our house, made an initial assessment, formulated a plan, and immediately began working. Mack and the team of ladies in the inventory, clean, and pack team were amazing. They worked tirelessly to get our house squared away and in order. Mack also supervised the moving team, and took great care in ensuring our property was properly cared for, moved, and stored. He constantly communicated with us and kept us abreast of their progress. Tyler Initially set up our service and supervised the demo and mitigation team. Tyler and his crew were also fantastic. I could not have asked for better service if I were there supervising it myself. I hope that my family and I never again have to experience something like this. However, if we do, I will immediately demand ServPro, and will request Mack, Tyler and their team of professionals to put things back in order. Thank you guys, also to your teams. You made a stressful situation much easier to deal with. Thank you ServPro for sending these Professionals to help us navigate this devastating incident. Respectfully, J.E. Holmes

Don Duygo came out to look at the job, promptly sent the written estimate. He explained what I could do to lower my cost, what other services were available and each expense. He then returned the morning of cleaning to do extra work and introduce the cleaning crew. Destiny and Kaylena did an A+ job of cleaning and sanitising my kitchen, dining room and mechanical closet. Kaylena discovered a broken pipe, which is the source of the water leak and attendant water costs that neither I nor Maintenance had found. All were hard-working, cheerful, very competent people. I am recommending SERVPRO and this team wholeheartedly.

Free estimates. Great starter. Quote great. Crew of five worked 10.5 hours getting the drywall and flooring out of basement and laundry room. Spraying and wiping everything down with their mild killing chemicals then 5 days of machines drying and daily readings of wood wettest and then sealing all the wood. Finally, ready to get it all restored. ServoPro is the Best, price, Professional, on time, meatiness, and THE BIG ONE insurance approved. A+ by BBB

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
