SERVPRO Helps with the Insurance Claim Process

At SERVPRO, we understand that property damage can be overwhelming. With decades of experience, SERVPRO can help document damage and provide information related to the services performed that can assist customers during the insurance claim process.

Groundwater flooding is usually covered by flood insurance, not a standard homeowners policy.

Knowing where the main water shutoff is located on your property can help prevent water damage to your home or business in an emergency.

Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

Exceptional Service, Professionalism, and Attention to Detail I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the SERVPRO team for the outstanding work they provided at Sarah Ward Nursery, a Clinton Hill Community School, following a flood that required extensive cleaning, sanitizing, and preparation for our school community to return. The SERVPRO team worked with us for five consecutive days, and their level of organization, professionalism, and consistency was truly impressive. From the moment they arrived, they were punctual, focused, and respectful of our school environment. Their team maintained a very professional presence throughout the week, communicating primarily when clarification or direction was needed and remaining focused on the work at hand. What impressed me most was their organization and work ethic. Before taking their scheduled lunch break, the team would strategically stage the areas and materials they would be working on so that, upon returning, they could immediately resume and execute the next phase of the work. I also appreciated that the entire team took their break together and returned together, demonstrating a strong sense of teamwork, coordination, and accountability. I had the pleasure of working directly with two outstanding supervisors, who were professional, responsive, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful throughout the process. They made themselves available to address questions, provide updates, and ensure that the work was moving forward appropriately. SERVPRO's team understood that this was more than simply cleaning a building—it was about helping us restore a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for our children, families, teachers, and staff. Their efforts contributed greatly to our ability to prepare the school for reopening. I am truly grateful for the dedication, professionalism, and quality of service demonstrated by the entire SERVPRO team. I highly recommend SERVPRO to any school, organization, or facility that experiences flooding or water-related damage and requires professional cleaning, sanitizing, staging, and restoration services. Thank you, SERVPRO, for helping us get Sarah Ward Nursery ready to welcome our school community back. Your work was noticed, appreciated, and valued!

I couldn’t be happier with their service. The results were nothing short of outstanding. The crew was prompt and professional. They even found a cable box buried under a pile of debris that saved my brother from having to replace it. If I could give them 6 stars, I would!

ServPro have been so amazing. We had a not so pleasant sewer experience on Christmas Eve, and not only was someone still in the office to take our call, but they were able to schedule someone first thing the day after Christmas. It has been a lot of moving pieces but everyone we've worked with at the office and in person have been professional, knowledge, personable and extremely efficient. Highly recommend them for their commitment to customer service and expertise.

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
