SERVPRO Helps with the Insurance Claim Process

At SERVPRO, we understand that property damage can be overwhelming. With decades of experience, SERVPRO can help document damage and provide information related to the services performed that can assist customers during the insurance claim process.

When property damage occurs, a rapid response can help limit further damage and may reduce overall restoration costs.

Groundwater flooding is usually covered by flood insurance, not a standard homeowners policy.

Knowing where the main water shutoff is located on your property can help prevent water damage to your home or business in an emergency.

Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

The ServPro team spent over a month at Pope Memorial Humane Society after we had a fire in our building that left 90% of our building affected by smoke. The entire team was very kind and respectful, and also very thorough and efficient in their cleaning! Adam was super helpful and communicated with us every step of the way. We are super grateful for everything ServPro did to help us be able to open back up and get animals back in the building!

We had a fire at our facility that required extensive remediation from smoke damage. ServPro of the Seacoast had staff out the very next day to start evaluating damage and making a plan. Adam was our project manager, and he was extremely communicative and attentive theough every step of the process (which entailed multiple stages and took several weeks to complete). He answered all of our questions and provided regular updates without being asked - truly cannot speak highly enough of his level of professionalism. Crews were on site for full days every day until the job was done. Everyone was kind, hardworking, and easy to collaborate with (we still had work to do on our end, and they understood that!). We can't recommend this team highly enough. Thank you for the exceptional service! -The team (and animals) at Pope Memorial Humane Society - Cocheco Valley! 🐾

When I discovered water in the finished side of my basement, I made a quick call to my insurance company and they sent over ServPro of the Seacoast. Not only did they take quick action to solve my problem, they were very communicative and the teams they have sent over have been friendly and personable. Steve, as the lead, has been a pleasure to work with, and his dedication has really been outstanding. Very happy with the work that has been done and would use them again in a heartbeat if I ever, hopefully never, need to use this type of service again. Thank you, ServPro!

After an unfortunate issue due to an ice dam, I contacted Servpro to see if they could help me. They immediately sent Steve W. out to survey the damage. Steve and his associates were tremendous in every aspect of the job! They were professional, knowledgeable and extremely helpful, always explaining what they were doing and why. Their attention to detail was excellent. Steve was great to work with, always arrived when he said he would, worked around my schedule when necessary and contacted me if anything needed to be adjusted. I highly recommend Steve W. and his colleagues from Servpro.

We had a heating pipe that had a slow leak and finally burst. Mold, wet wall board, wet carpet - the works. Jesse and his team did a great job cleaning everything up, getting things dried out and keeping us informed of the whole process. Made a stressful time a little less stressful.

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
