Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

We had a severe water leak occur that impacted a 3rd of our house. ServPro North Elkhart County came quickly to mitigate the damage that night and stayed to early the next morning. They completely mitigated the damage, walked us through our options, and worked with our insurance carrier to ensure we were covered. They were knowledgeable about our type of home (Built in 1910 with Victorian molding and trim). They gave us a rebuild estimate and quickly converted from mitigation to reconstruction with extreme professionalism. We quickly selected their rebuild estimate and now have 2 remodeled bathrooms and a living room that my wife and I feel exceeds our expectations. We are very happy!!! I want to thank Jim Beck and his team for the quality, effort and diligence to complete the job admirably. I would recommend them for any construction project you might have. A large tree fell and crashed through our roof. Servpro North Elkhart County, Jim Beck and Joe Granzotto most definitely took extra steps to help guide us through this disaster. Since my wife has extreme allergies to pollen and mold, we had a company do an air sampling testing in our house. The test determined that in the basement there was evidence of inactive mold only needing high humidity to seed spores into the air. We had ServPro do a "HEPA Sandwich" the basement which required moving every surface (items, walls, ceiling and floor) to be "cleaned" and vacuumed . Also in the sump and water softener rooms to have unpainted wall areas painted covering mold viewable mold. This is the 3rd time they have done their magic and have always done a super job. They did the whole job while we vacated the house to eliminate any risk to my wife from and particles and odors the might be present on order being out of town. They did everything we asked and way beyond at a reasonable price. Couldn't ask for better service and meeting out special needs. Call them with confidence. Thank you ServPro of North Elkhart.

SERVPRO of North Elkhart County My father and I are extremely pleased with our recent time spent using SERVPRO of North Elkhart County during October of 2023. Our situation was a bit complicated, in that we came from out of state to handle estate affairs for a recent death in the family, which were compounded by unresolved estate affairs from another death in the family two years prior and needing to prep the house for yet another family member to return home from a nursing facility. At the house, the basement was that of a hoarder situation and the main level of the house was also quite dirty and cluttered. I knew I could clear and clean much of the main level, but the basement and the deeper cleaning needed on the main level were going to be far beyond my ability with the time we had to be there. Owner Terry and General Manager Joe (both very warm and friendly) came out to do a walk-through and assess our needs. They were very cognizant about trying to make sure they would be arranging services particular to our needs and not just offering a blanket suite of services. They never said as much, but they clearly managed to move their schedule around quite a bit in order to accommodate starting work very shortly after we accepted their estimates due to our shortened schedule of being from out of state. They came for the walkthrough on a Tuesday, sent us estimates later the same day, which we accepted; a dumpster was dropped off on Thursday; work began Friday. The day-to-day work was overseen by Carol, who was very personable and attentive and provided additional assistance over and above. She stayed in constant contact making sure there were no issues arising and that we were happy with the progress, as well did Joe. The labor crew and sub-contractors were all very pleasant and respectful of the house and also offered extra assistance over and beyond as well. Of particular note, even though our hoarder was not emotionally attached to the mess in any way (which allowed for very fast progress), the crew still moved with measure to be on the lookout for personal effects and other items I requested to be watched for. They managed to find a Purple Heart that had been issued to my grandfather during his time in the 12th Armored Division in WWII France and Germany, as well as service patches, other medals and old photos. I was so proud of them that I asked to take a group photo, which they humbly obliged. The last day we were there almost seemed too quiet and lonely with all of the crew gone. We very much appreciate the effort that was put into this job and everyone’s hard work. We would heartily recommend this franchisee to anyone that needs their services. How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely. 

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help. 
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.  
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items. 
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property. 
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.” 

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
