Groundwater flooding is usually covered by flood insurance, not a standard homeowners policy.

Knowing where the main water shutoff is located on your property can help prevent water damage to your home or business in an emergency.

Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

The serve pro team was exceptional! It’s always uneasy having a stranger in your home and that was not the case here. Brandon and his teammate from serve pro were so inviting , answered any questions I had but were so personal to talk to . I felt like I knew them . It’s not every day you hire a company that’s comes out and they put you at ease by talking to you like a person and not another job checking off their list. At some point they even offered to help me get something out of my car when they seen me struggling. They were professional did what they came to do but also took the time to put me at ease at the work they were doing ! Thank you Brandon and teammate !

We recently had to hire a professional cleaning crew for a very challenging and emotional situation — cleaning out my mom’s apartment and refrigerator after the power had been off. It was a big, unpleasant job that we honestly didn’t even know how to tackle. From the moment they arrived, the team was professional, compassionate, and absolutely incredible at what they do. They didn’t flinch at the mess, worked quickly but thoroughly. What could have been an overwhelming, stressful day for our family turned into a huge relief thanks to their skill and kindness. I can’t recommend them enough — if you ever find yourself needing serious cleaning help, this is the team you want in your corner. Worth every penny and then some.

They came out within an hour of my call to address water on my floor from a backup. Friendly and professional 3 person crew. Nell explained the process and went over the forms with me. They cleaned my home true to their motto - it looks like it never happened! They were very neat as they moved equipment in and out of my home. A very professional company who I would strongly recommend to anyone

I cannot recommend Servpro more! The team and service was extraordinary from beginning to end. They immediately took on this job after a different company damaged our basement. They gave us our home back, better than it was left. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, dedication, tireless efforts, availability, guidance, and support during such a tough period of time. Please hire them!

This team is incredible from start to finish. We were in a bad situation with a different company who destroyed our basement unnecessarily following small water damage from our main water line breaking in our foundation, and the ServPro team took our job on. The professionalism and attention to detail was amazing. Big shout out to both Ryan Z and Osie, as well as Bobby the owner. All three of them ensured the job was done to the best of their abilities and their transparency, knowledge and craftsmanship were top notch. Would definitely recommend to anyone!

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
