Knowing where the main water shutoff is located on your property can help prevent water damage to your home or business in an emergency.

Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

Overall, they were outstanding. A+ to Glen for working with us and having great communication throughout the process. In terms of the work performed we were extremely satisfied as well. The only negative comment I have is the lack of clean up once they finished the project. They worked on the project while we were out of town. When we returned, we found that they left old, damaged wood and moulding pieces with nails in them just laying all over the garage floor where someone could easily step on one or drive over it. Additionally, they were too lazy to move the extra bricks and flooring pieces back where they were originally stored. They threw them into the middle of the garage but never put them back once they finished the project. And there was no attempt to broom sweep or use the blower to clean the floor either. In conclusion, the work and craftsmanship A+. Glen for his communication and working with sub contractors A+. The clean-up following the completion of the project D.

Mike and the team were wonderful! We had a bad leaking issue due to rain water getting into the roof from construction work next door. The Servpro team came in overnight and got to work quickly on cleaning things up, and set up fans and a dehumidifier to dry everything out. Everyone was so kind and made sure we had contact information should we need anything throughout the drying process. Really grateful they were able to act so quickly and prevent any real damage. 10/10 would recommend them!

I discovered that a bed bug had hitched a ride home with me from the movie theater. When I figured out where bites were coming from, OMG. I was freaking out, feeling gross and overwhelmed. Curtis from Servpro came to steam my carpets, beds, ect. He was very professional, and it gave me comfort knowing the work was being done correctly. Curtis also put protectors under all the legs of my furniture to protect from moisture damage. To me, that was a considerate touch, during an overwhelming time. Thank you, thank you, thank you! (Ps. Haven’t been to a theater since).

I had a pipe break under my kitchen sink flooding most of my house. Servpro was recommended by my insurance company. I am so glad they did. The crews were fast to respond and communicated with me every day. They let me know what was happening and what to expect next. I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again or recommend them for any water damage restoration.

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
