Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

After an unexpected ceiling collapse flooded our unit, we immediately contacted ServPro of Santa Clarita for mitigation and restoration. Their team arrived within two hours with blowers and dehumidifiers and began mitigation right away. John Werner served as our primary contact and was an outstanding partner throughout the process. Once we learned ServPro also handled restoration, choosing them for the full end-to-end project was an easy decision. We worked closely with Hector Chirinos on reconstruction, and he offered excellent guidance while recommending trusted partners for additional work we wanted done. The ServPro team—John, Hector, and Ellie—was professional, responsive, and courteous. We highly recommend ServPro for restoration and reconstruction needs.

Five stars for William at Serpro Santa Clarita. Professional, honest and knowledgeable, hopefully I don’t need Serpro’s services again but if I do I won’t bother calling the competition. We used this company last year and I can’t fault them.

This was an easy, single phone call to solve a flood at my property. Will was very easy to talk to and was very knowledgeable about the projection of managing this problem. I would definitely recommend using this company because of how easy everything was.

Great company. Great choice! -Had some water damage in the kitchen that resulted in likely microbial growth. Called a few companies to come out and look. Servpro picked up on the first call. Spoke with John and he was able to gather all the information he needed and sent a technician out the next day. -Will came out the following day to take a look at the damage. Super professional and gave a realistic outlook of the situation. He explained the standard protocol for situations like this and was able to give a rough timeline of things. He was extremely detailed and gave a full report and quote the following morning. -We had a couple of quotes that were lower than what Servpro gave, but we trusted Servpro to do the job correctly according to industry standards. No cut corners, no unexpected expenses. -Will's team (Jaden and ?Gerald?) came out according to our schedule/availability and did exactly what Will told us would happen. Both super professional as well. -Will was super receptive to any questions we had and was able to keep us in the loop about what was happening/when they would return/etc. It was a no brainer to go with SERVPRO.

I found what looked like mold in my guest room closet (likely caused by moisture from a nearby shower with poor ventilation) and reached out to Servpro. I spoke with John, who was able to come out the same day, even earlier than originally scheduled. John was communicative, honest, and friendly throughout. More importantly, I felt like he genuinely had my best interests in mind. Instead of using the situation to scare me or find reasons to charge for services I didn't need, he gave me an honest assessment and a solution that ended up costing me nothing. Finding mold is unsettling by nature, and it would have been easy for someone to take advantage of that. It's rare to find a person who prioritizes giving you the right answer over what benefits their bottom line. To me, that's the most trustworthy and honorable way to do business, and I'd recommend John and Servpro SCV to anyone dealing with a similar issue.

The team from Servpro were excellent when we needed them most. Their team came out at 1am to board up our door after it was broken into. The team was friendly and respectful and did their best to solve our problem quickly. They have also worked with our insurance company to get invoices reimbursed. We can't thank you all enough!

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
