SERVPRO Helps with the Insurance Claim Process

At SERVPRO, we understand that property damage can be overwhelming. With decades of experience, SERVPRO can help document damage and provide information related to the services performed that can assist customers during the insurance claim process.

When property damage occurs, a rapid response can help limit further damage and may reduce overall restoration costs.

Groundwater flooding is usually covered by flood insurance, not a standard homeowners policy.

Knowing where the main water shutoff is located on your property can help prevent water damage to your home or business in an emergency.

Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

Sean and his crew were professional, reliable and attentive. My home turned from a water disaster to a beautiful amazing modern home. Sean was exceptional in every way by guiding me in every aspect of the process, down to the kitchen knobs. The crew were courteous, knowledgeable and reliable. I received this referral from Farmers insurance and they sent me an amazing team. I would highly recommend ServPro of Colton to anyone in need of water, restoration, re-modeling. Thank you Sean and crew for your exceptional service.

After our home suffered smoke and wind damage from the Eaton Fire, Servpro was an absolute lifesaver. From start to finish, Armenica and Sean went above and beyond to guide us through the entire cleaning and restoration process. Their professionalism, expertise, and genuine care made a stressful situation so much more manageable. Armenica was especially incredible—she not only coordinated everything seamlessly but also connected us with the soft content cleaning company and walked me through every step of the process. Her support and knowledge were invaluable. Sean and the entire team were thorough, efficient, and treated our home with the utmost care. If you’re dealing with fire damage and need a team you can truly trust, look no further than Servpro. We are so grateful for their help and highly recommend their services!

I had a water leak on the second floor of my home and contacted them. The owner came out the same day and gave me a competitive quote. The work was completed in a very timely manner and all the repairs were done excellently. No mess left or created. They did a great job with drywall dust, leaving virtually no dust at all. The owner takes great pride in his business and the work that is completed. I do hope I do not require their services in the future, but if I do I will certainly contact them.

ServPro of Colton was great! I highly recommend Sean for any and all work that needs to get done to restore and renovate a restroom. Sean and team's attention to detail and quality of work is impeccable. He provided ideas and suggestions to help save money on the little things. The only thing, the project took longer than anticipated, however, those were things out of his control. Overall, hands down I will be calling again for other projects around our home...9 out 10 or 4.8 out 5. Great job Sean, thank you!

Shaun & his crew were very professional. Friendly, reliable, and prompt. Free estimate. Work was done well. We had a shower drain leak that caused ceiling dry wall damage in kitchen. I hope we never have to use the service again but I will recommend. Minor clean up after crew left which is expected.

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
