Groundwater flooding is usually covered by flood insurance, not a standard homeowners policy.

Knowing where the main water shutoff is located on your property can help prevent water damage to your home or business in an emergency.

Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

We had a great experience! Our technicians took the time to explain exactly what they were going to do and why. They were proffesional and friendly, and made us feel secure during a stressful time. The head of this Servpro was available any time we had a question or concern. We highly recommend them! If I could give them 100 stars I'd happily do it!

Anibal was courteous, kind, and incredibly hard-working. He was prompt, clear, and concise throughout the entire process, and very understanding of our situation. He did a great job handling the water damage, and we truly appreciated his professionalism and the quality of work. I’d also like to mention Joy and Vlada (apologies if I misspelled the names) — they were both very helpful and contributed to a smooth experience. I called Servpro and from the moment they answered, I knew I was in good hands. They came out and assisted me immediately, but one team member stood out more than the rest: special shout out to Andrew. He has amazing knowledge and endless patience in explaining the process to me. Thank you, Servpro!

I contacted Servpro to assist with mold remediation, and I cannot say enough good things about my experience with Servpro but mostly Andrew C. To be honest, I was not very knowledgeable about how to handle this type of situation and felt a bit overwhelmed. Andrew was incredibly patient; he took the time to explain the process step-by-step and even offered helpful recommendations so I could make informed decisions. Having someone take the time to explain the details really says a lot about a company. Andrew’s character and work ethic convinced me that Servpro is an honest, reliable, and trustworthy business. Based on my interaction with Andrew and the quality of his work, I highly recommend them.

I contacted Servpro for a mold issue after getting some insane quotes from other companies. When I first called Servpro, the woman on the phone did her best to explain and assess exactly what would be needed, language barrier and the price was much more reasonable. My husband even joked, at that price point, we "couldn't be beggars -regarding perfection." We were wrong! Andrew and Abraham arrived early and were fantastic. Andrew walked us through the entire process and explained thoroughly what they would be doing. When they finished, we had our general contractor come in to inspect the area. He actually asked us for Andrew's contact information for work because he said the job was done "extremely perfectly." I strongly recommend Servpro. They are honest, reliable, and the quality of work is top-tier Happy New Year Servpro

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
